Why I’m Building a Women’s Sports Media Company

The origin story, what I’ve learned so far, and the big vision for Good Sport.

A couple of weeks ago, we hit three months of Good Sport. I’m already looking forward to a year from now when I can say yes, I do have a 15-month-old. A baby media company. Her first words were Barclays Center.

I wanted to use this week’s post as an opportunity to spell out why I’m building Good Sport and what the big vision is here, so our editor Rosabelle did a huge coup, took the mic, and interviewed ME all about it.

Spoiler: Good Sport exists because I wanted to create a media outlet for women’s sports that I wished existed as a fan. One that’s more swaggy than girlboss, more gen-z than millennial (no shade, I’m 27 and a generational cusper), and more pro-women than clickbaity. I want to help build the cultural relevancy of this space and tell the stories that get lost in the bigger news streams. I want to celebrate the distinct cultures in different cities around women’s sports.

And I want to have fun! Is that too much to ask?! No, because I’m in charge of my own destiny…Here’s what Rosabelle and I covered:

  • What Good Sport NYC actually is, and why we’re building it

  • What’s missing from the current state of women’s sports media

  • Cool work happening right now: the WNBA’s 30th season campaign, the New York Liberty’s retro branding, and the indie creators doing the best work out

  • Three months of Good Sport by the numbers

  • What it’s been like building this thing solo and on the side of a full-time job, and what I’ve learned so far

  • The five-year vision: a national network of Good Sport hubs

  • My sports origin story, including my soccer-themed room and Mia Hamm posters

  • Women’s sports trivia: Cromer family edition

Enjoy this episode :) I had so much fun with Rosabelle talking about it all.
