[Good Sport NYC] Women's Sports in New York: Aug 17 - 23
Everything you should know, watch, and do this week as a women's sports fan in NYC.
Hello there, Good Sport truthers <3 We have some new readers in the crowd this week, so I want to introduce myself: I’m Christiana. I launched Good Sport NYC three months ago, which means if you’re here, you’re in early and I’m very fond of you…Here’s what I look like while writing this fyi:
There’s a gap in local media around women’s sports. Massive growth in this space has led to more coverage and investment overall, but there aren’t enough resources dedicated to the specific women’s sports scenes and cultures in different cities. So I’m taking a whack at it myself, starting here in New York, not as a sports expert or journalist, but as a fan who felt that gap myself.
Good Sport covers the NYC women’s sports scene, mostly from a cultural lens. This weekly newsletter contains highlights from what’s going on with NYC’s pro women’s sports teams (both on and off the court), plus a weekly game schedule, events, and more fun stuff.
If you have feedback, ideas, skills to share…I want to hear all about it. Hit reply, DM me, talk to me if you see me around. I would love to know what you think.
Now here’s your newsletter :)
On the Good Sport NYC podcast: Kenny Saint-Vil—longtime NY Liberty loyal and WNBA reporter—joined us for a temperature check on our team three months into the season. Listen on Spotify, Apple, or wherever you get your podcasts.
NYC women’s sports news & culture
Here’s what you should know this week.
Sabrina On SLAM. The NY Liberty’s Sabrina Ionescu is the latest cover star for SLAM, announcing her SLAM X Nike Sabrina 4s. I think these are fire. Nike and SLAM did some cool promo with a Sabrina 4 Slushy Truck that popped up around Brooklyn and at Barclays ahead of last week’s game against the Sparks.

Sam Kerr set some new records this weekend. In a 2-1 win over the KC Current, Sam Kerr scored after a pass from Jaedyn Shaw, becoming the first player in NWSL history to reach 80 regular-season goals, and setting a new franchise record (31 goals) for regular-season goals scored. Not bad for just two months back in NYC.
Gotham FC is sitting pretty at the top. Speaking of soccer, our win against KC marks our 8th in a row, giving us a 6-point first-place lead at the top of the NWSL standings. NYC is in fact a soccer town.
